Long Arm Machines

I have spent the last few nights researching long arm machines.  There is way too much too learn and I feel like I haven't found out anything new.  So, do you own a long arm?  What do you have?  Pros?  Cons?  What do you wish you would have asked for known about before you made your decision?

I have been working on a Gammill Classic for 10+ years and love it. Of course, there's regulation modes, Statler, and all sorts of add-ons. I don't have any of those and do great! Don't overbuy. Good luck!

I have an HQ16, which I absolutely love. My advise would be to go to one of the machine quilting conventions, where they'll let you play with all the machines. Unless you're either rich or going into biz, you probably don't need a 30 inch throat. And I think Handiquilter is based in Salt Lake City.

Handiquilter IS based in Salt Lake City. I have the HQ16 and love it.
I'll never be one that'll quilt for an income so I am quite satisfied with the HQ16.

I never "planned" on a longarm. It was a "moment" when hubby and I were out that he said he'd get me one if I wanted. Was I going to refuse?

I have quilted on a variety of Gammills at my favorite quilt shop. They are great and I really like the sturdiness of the frame. Definetly go to a quilt show and play around with some different machines. Good luck.

I have an A-1 and love it. It rolls smooth and stitches even smoother. I love the cruise mode. But buying a LA is like buying a car. Budget needs to be considered along with your personal preferences. At Machine Quilters Resource there is a thread on machine research. I think the best thing to do is go to HMQA which will be held the week before mothers day at Sandy's Expo center.
I think they even have a class about what to look for in a longarm. Take a few classes to see how they are used. Then go and test drive every single one of them. Do the same thing on each and every one. That will give you a feel. It is worth the work. That way you will be assured you made the right choice.

Hi, I have a Gammill Statler Stitcher and I LOVE it! Absolutely wonderful, thousands of patterns, easy learning curve. Wonderful people at the company. Have had no problems with my machine.

My Grandma and I have and HQ16, but I didn't do the research behind the purchase.
As for the HMQS - yes classes were still available and I would love to have a friend in a class with me. They are expensive, but worth it if you are going to consider purchasing a long arm.
